Weekend of Learning: Round 2!

Read on if you like to teach and would like to be a part of a Mentor-led initiative to teach together as an event in the near future!

One weekend last month, on their own, a group of Second Life Mentor Coaches put together a great lineup of classes for the Second Life community. Held at Tenera, the following classes pulled in roughly 68 unique visitors:

Fine Tuning Your Avatar (2 classes)
Introduction to Scripting (2 classes)
How to Deal with Abusers
Resident Q&A

First, we’d like to applaud this initiative: what a great way to bring teaching to Second Life! The Coaches again is hoping to pull together another weekend of events on July 11th - 13th. Simon Kline is the point of contact–send him an IM if you are interested!–and he’s suggested these ideas for classes for inspiration: building, scripting, wiki-ing, getting help in SL, texturing, sculpted prims, machinima, team building, land management, groups, appaearance editing, event hosting, Question and Answer sessions… whatever you feel confident in talking about and sharing with residents, come along and share it with the residents of SL!

To continue with the setup plans, the following information was provided to VTeam in regards to the next Weekend of Learning. Please read on!:

Default Avatar Appearance Follow Up Survey

Back in January we asked what were the biggest complaints you were getting from new users about their appearance.  New avatar choices were implemented and have been available since June 17th, we’d like to ask you a few questions to gauge what impact (if any) this change has had.  Please take the short Avatar Appearance Follow Up Survey to share your opinions!  Default Avatar Follow Up Survey

To learn more about the new default avatars please read here. Thank You!

Monthly Mentor Meeting 6/27/08 10AM & 5PM PDT Transcripts

Below you will find BOTH transcripts.  I normally only post 1 transcript.  I have posted both opening addresses by Amber but going forward I will only post Amber’s message once since it is basically the same at both meetings.  I will include the Q&A portion from both meetings.   As to the missing numbers please note that I did not edit out any questions from either meeting.  Only names are removed.

TRANSCRIPT 6/27/08 - 5PM

Mia: We have a new setup so we can no longer hear you in open chat but you can hear us without trouble. With that in mind any and all questions pertaining to today’s meeting can be IM’d to me throughout this meeting. At the end of Amber’s monolog I will give Amber the questions received one at a time! Thanks all for being here this evening!

Amber Linden: ok.. we should probably begin..

Amber Linden: Hello Everyone!

Amber Linden: Last month Vteam announced the placement of another suggestion box at SLVEC.

Amber Linden: This box is for suggestions on how you, the Mentors, would like to see our meetings change.

Amber Linden: Or give us additional items/suggestions as to what you’d like to see discussed at these meetings.

Amber Linden: We didn’t get very many suggestions : (

Amber Linden: only two actually

Amber Linden: and the topics mentioned in those were more suited to support questions than to a Mentor specific meeting.

Amber Linden: I think perhaps the word isn’t out yet about the suggestion box –

Amber Linden: it is right in front of the Buddy Center on SLVEC

Amber Linden: so please pass the word around and Vteam will do more announcements as to its existence too. : )

Amber Linden: One thing we have heard about in our office hours is that Mentors would like us to shorten the talk…

Amber Linden: and leave more time for questions at the end of the meeting.

Amber Linden: So that is what we will do starting with these meetings.

Amber Linden: I promise to be much less long-winded … lol

Amber Linden: and open the meeting for questions and comments by the Mentors here earlier then I’ve done previously.

Amber Linden: Additionally we will change the WAY you give us questions.

Amber Linden: No more just shouting it out in any fashion

Amber Linden: That gets way too confusing.

Amber Linden: We’d like you to IM Mia at any point during the meeting with your question,

Amber Linden: this way you won’t forget what you’d wanted to ask.

Amber Linden: Once the Q & A portion of the meeting begins, Mia will read the question so that everyone can hear…

Amber Linden: and we’ll go through as many as possible, one at a time, until our hour is up.

Amber Linden: For your questions to be heard they MUST be IM’d to Mia please. : )

Mentor Groups Hot Topic Question: Help With Abuse?

Many Second Life Mentors have noticed an increasing number of questions directed to the Mentor and Mentor Q&A group channel in regards to acts of abuse. We thank all of you, with due respect, who have not IMed any of the Second Life Mentor groups to request support from Lindens to address either your abuse or support concerns. However, we would like to request further that issues of abuse not be brought to the Mentor or Mentor Q&A channel. Here are just three reasons why:

Follow up on the “Card Sort” Survey

Many Second Life Mentors participated in this lengthy survey and have asked a few questions on the results. Here is a response from Malbers Linden!

This is Malbers Linden. I’m one of Linden Lab’s Resident Experience designers (a.k.a. user experience designer). I’ve been conducting a survey as data for my redesign effort for the top-level menus in the SL Viewer.
I wanted to thank the 175 of you who invested your time in my survey. I know the survey was time intensive so I wanted to post this note to thank you again for your efforts to make Second Life better for everyone.

The survey (or “card sort” in this case) has provided incredibly valuable data in the redesign effort. This redesign should make the menus less cluttered, more approachable for new residents, and more efficient for experienced residents.

The analysis of your data and the redesign is underway but not complete. Some things are obvious; for example, people seem to agree on where the “Quit”, “Take off all your clothes”, and “Help” menu item belong. Many other options are a LOT harder to put in a logical spot and your data is helping figure this out.
As I make progress and get closer to something which can use more feedback, I’ll make it public for all of you to see and comment on.

Thanks again.

Malbers Linden

SL Volunteer Island Lottery Results

SL Volunteer Island Lottery is complete! There were roughly 150 entrants and 64 randomly chosen winners. A “next in line” list has also been randomly chosen in the event that any of the present tenants do not stay on their property for whatever reason. A few developments in the regions, such as pathways and a few of the staple projects (freebie store not yet built, eep!), are not finished. However, we know that many of you have been aching to move back in there as soon as possible, so we’ll be opening the ropes tonight to the lottery winners and you may feel free to purchase your plot (remember, it is a private island, so you will not be charged tier) and begin building!

[ Lottery Results! ]

We’ll be interested in your feedback on how this process went and is going over the next month while everyone’s getting settled in. Feel free to add a notecard to the Suggestions bin at SLVEC, or visit us at our office hours! The SL Volunteer Islands are in celebration for your roaring successes as Mentors–please enjoy!

Default Avatar Modifications Q&A with Jesse Linden June 10th, 11:00AM-12:00PM SLT

Bring your considerations and insights to this meeting for an introduction to the topic followed by a Q&A session. If you can’t make it, a transcript will be provided at the blog.
