Q&A: inSL Logo with Red Linden & the VTeam
MIA: We are all anxious to hear about inSL! Lets give a warm welcome to Red Linden who is here to tell us all about it!
MIA: Red the floor is yours!
Lexie Linden: wooot!
Amber Linden: wooo hooo RED!
Red Linden: hi everyone!
Red Linden: Thanks for having me here today.
Red Linden: For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a marketing program manager at Linden Lab.
Red Linden: I’m here today to talk about shoes.
Red Linden: And websites, business cards, powerpoint slides, annual reports, ads, tshirts, syllabi, curriculums, invitations, invoices, conferences, brochures, swag, product packaging, videos, social network pages, etc.
Red Linden: You get the idea - anything you might create in or out of Second Life where you want to talk about your presence inworld and your connection to the vibrant Second Life community.
Red Linden: Getting a logo license is free with an easy web signup process.
Red Linden: http://secondlife.com/corporate/brand/insl/index.php
Red Linden: In addition to just using the logo, this program is a great way to get your success stories into Linden Lab’s marketing and pr pipeline.
Red Linden: I am working to build ways for inSL participants to highlight their work on secondlife.com, inworld, in our press and conference messaging and our marketing materials. Stay tuned for those opportunities!
Red Linden: you can see the slides behind me for examples of how people are using it
Red Linden: you can see the slides behind me for examples of how people are using it
Red Linden: you can see the slides behind me for examples of how people are using it
Red Linden: and i’ll take questions through mia now
MIA: ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE IM ME NOW….
MIA: Does this cost anything
Red Linden: while she’s managing questions.. i’ll talk for a bit..
Red Linden: its free
MIA: How do you get yourself and your stuff promoted by linden lab?
Red Linden: i send surveys to the list of people who have signed up
Red Linden: asking for stories… asking to see what you are using it on
Red Linden: and i’m getting back great stuff
Red Linden: using pics from their websites, business cards, inworld stuff
Red Linden: for all sorts of stuff
MIA: will be other versions of this logo in the future too, or is this it
Red Linden: this logo was designed to be something that everyone can use..
Red Linden: we actually went through many many rounds of logo design
Red Linden: and ended up getting feedback each time that we needed to pick something
Red Linden: that everyone - nonprofits, roleplayers, businesses, artists and musicians could all use
MIA: When I read the guidelines, it seemed as if I had to be a company or at least sell in SL to use the logo. Did I read wrong?
Red Linden: its for everyone.. you can put it on your moo cards, your facebook page
Red Linden: you can put it on your blog…
Red Linden: here’s the trick with a tshirt
MIA: Is there to be any policing to stop misuse of the logo ?
Red Linden: or any item..
Red Linden: it has to be NOT the most important thing on your item
Red Linden: your own name, your own art, your own words should be more important
MIA: why should i label inworld stuff with the inSL logo? isn’t it obviouse? has it any vantages?
Red Linden: there are a few reasons people might use it inworld
Red Linden: one is to help visual recognition
Red Linden: since this is a new logo, by default, it doesnt have meaning yet
Red Linden: the hand logo was the same way many years ago
Red Linden: in this case, the inSL logo is for residents to show that they are a part of the community
Red Linden: and to spread the word to other residents
Red Linden: inworld usage is an obvious part of that
Red Linden: the other reason is something a musician might use
MIA: will there be statistics showing if using this logo helps improve anything for those using it
Red Linden: a live musician could put this on their rl CDs with a slurl to their hangout
Red Linden: or listening loft
Red Linden: that might bring people into Second Life that havent been here before
Red Linden: and the logo will start to be recognizable inworld because they also saw it on the CD…
Red Linden: as for statistics.. i’m working on that..
Red Linden: its new.. it will take time to develop
MIA: If I apply individually now,and then start a business, can I apply organizationally later?
Red Linden: yes.. you can sign up both ways
MIA: Any more questions???
MIA: The signup doesn’t let you sign up more than once. Will that be changed?
Red Linden: oh..
Red Linden: in that case.. the easy thing to do is to sign up under a different avatar for the personal vs. organizational license
MIA: is it possible to write under the logo like “German, italian, spanish”
Red Linden: you arent allowed to make it look like PART of the logo
Red Linden: but you can make it very clear with the rest of your site
Red Linden: but you can make it very clear with the rest of your site
Red Linden: but you can make it very clear with the rest of your site
MIA: with the insl logo there’s ruls about spacing around it. Will that be incorporated into the logo image at some stage so that people can just put the image there with the spacing rules already applied.
Red Linden: i’m working on that..
Red Linden: some files are already fixed
Red Linden: if you re-download.. you’ll get the new ones..
Red Linden: i have jira tasks created for the other ones.. grin
MIA: how do people know whats meaning with this logo? only by seeing this logo as a trademark?
Red Linden: they know the meaning by how they see it used..
Red Linden: everytime a machinima artist puts it on their video
Red Linden: people will start to associate it with the community inside Second Life
Red Linden: everytime a non profit uses it on their annual report, it builds credibility for the work of the community
MENTOR: it’s a valuable marketing tool, a bit of instant recognition to add to the presence you’re trying to build
Red Linden: exactly
MIA: is there some pre written ‘alt’ text we can use with the logo, so that when people hover their mouse over it it can say something along the lines of “this webpage is related to the virtual world Second Life(tm)”
Red Linden: we havent specified exact alt text yet.. but thats a good point
Red Linden: I’ll have to think about what text makes the most sense there
MIA: would LL be opposed to residents creating a flag of their own to represent the community?
Red Linden: i’m not qualified to answer that.. but i wish you good luck in getting everyone to agree on one..
MIA: I mean before, we could always make planes and boats and stuff and the eye in hand kind of united us all
Red Linden: questions about the hand logo are more in LauraP’s area
Red Linden: She has a session with you coming up
MIA: how exactly would those using the inSL logo get promoted by LL? would there be a website with a list of shops, artists, organisations using the logo and something like a “logo user of the week” with more in depth information about this user and his or her shop/work?
Red Linden: yes.. things like that exactly…
Red Linden: i dont know what shape that will take..
Red Linden: i’m still working that out while gathering my list of people who have great stories to tell
Red Linden: even if they arent selling things
Red Linden: our PR firm actively pitches interesting resident stories to the press
Red Linden: thats one option that works right now
MIA: do they want people to submit interesting success stories to someone about the usage of the inSL logo?
Red Linden: red@lindenlab.com
MIA: what’s your favourite story of the ones you read already? i can’t imagine how a story about the logo looks like so i’m curiouse ^^
Red Linden: another option, where its appropriate, is to have residents in our tradeshow booths at conferences
Amber Linden: (oh cool!)
Red Linden: telling their success stories
Red Linden: i’ve got about 10 different ideas i’m scheming on for how to promote the connection between inSL and the community
Red Linden: next question?
MIA: are there example websites for helping to make it right
Red Linden: right now there is text guidelines
Red Linden: i’m working on making it easier to use the logo properly
MIA: If used on a web page can this logo be a link to bring people to a sign up page with your name as a referal?
Red Linden: i didnt see that addressed in the policy..
MIA: Do i have to put the picture I want in my SLURl on my website or something?
Red Linden: i’m not sure i understand that question..
Amber Linden: picture = logo maybe?
Red Linden: are you talking about the slurl form or the inSL registration form?
Red Linden: you dont have to have a picture in a slurl, but if you want one, i think it has to be hosted somewhere
MIA: Goin on in the same line of question as a link at a web page… could it be used at blogs jut to direct ppl to sign up?… No interest in using me as refereal…
Red Linden: in general, we love referrals… so i cant imagine a conflict between the referral program and the insl policy
MIA: We were not allowed to color the eye and hand logo if we used it on our site before. Can we change the color of the inSL logo to match a color scheme of our businesscards etc?
Red Linden: you can have it any color you want.. as long as its teal
Red Linden: jk
Red Linden: you have teal on a white background…
Red Linden: white on black, black on white
Red Linden: black on your background, white on your background
Red Linden: teal is the color it already comes in..
Red Linden: you cannot change the color of the logo..
Red Linden: you CAN change the color of the background for the black or white version
Red Linden: lol
MIA: in case i would use this logo without registering… what would happen to me?
Red Linden: you will automatically be permanently ruthed?
MIA: ahahahahaha
Red Linden: jk…
Red Linden: this is a real life license and its free..
Red Linden: yes.. the attorneys make me know that..
Red Linden: because its a real legal document
MIA: Well Red that wraps up the questions…. Do you have anything further to add?
Red Linden: even if this logo isnt something you personally have a need for
Red Linden: you can help spread the word to residents who are trying to do stuff where it might help
Red Linden: thanks guys!
Lexie Linden: Excellent Q&A!!!
MIA: Red thanks so much for coming today and helping to explain about inSL
Lexie Linden: Thanks Red : ))
Amber Linden: Thank you so much for coming Red!
MIA: You are awesome!
George Linden: Woohoo, lots of great answers, thank you Red!! And thank you Mentors for your questions!!

I wonder, with all of the concern over residents not using your copyrights and marks correctly, are you going to take any action against http://www.freelindensnow.com and their in-world spam campaign? I mean, making their website look like an official Second Life website by design is pretty bad, right?
I gotta tell ya, I’m pretty well steamed over the whole in-world spam thing, and even moreso that I have to worry about losing my SL account for not following the new requirements while blatant scammers are out there flaunting inappropriate use of Second Life logos and designs.
